Shortly after the completion of the FUHUB, Germany’s first life science property in timber hybrid construction, DRIVEN the property received the DGNB sustainability certificate in platinum. In addition to the timber hybrid construction, the award was also given for an exclusively electricity-based energy concept with a photovoltaic system, air-source heat pumps and geothermal probe-based heat storage systems. In addition, the FUHUB has green roofs, rainwater infiltration and the use of rainwater to irrigate the outdoor facilities, e-charging stations for bicycles and communal green spaces in the outdoor facilities.
“The DGNB Platinum certification is the culmination of our comprehensive sustainability plans, which we were able to successfully implement for the FUHUB. For a life science property, the highest sustainability standards are a must in our eyes. After all, sustainability is the basis of the human future, the further improvement of which research is striving for,” says Ingo Weiss, Managing Partner of DRIVEN.
FUHUB is located on the grounds of the innovation campus “FUBIC” (Business and Innovation Center next to Freie Universität Berlin Campus) developed by WISTA in the Dahlem district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Like FUBIC as a whole, the building offers space for technology-oriented start-ups, young and established companies, especially from the life sciences, healthcare industry and information and communication technologies. Biological as well as chemical and physical laboratories can be located in the laboratory areas. The tenants of the 6,600-square-meter life science property include the Federal Institute for Real Estate (use of the space by laboratories of the Federal Environment Agency), Freie Universität with the Scale Up Lab, SimpliOffice, a provider of coworking and event spaces, the Zuse Institute Berlin with the Modal research campus, and UNDKRAUSS, which is researching innovative technologies for the construction industry at the FUHUB.
In addition to the recently completed FUHUB, DRIVEN is currently developing another life science property in Berlin-Moabit. By the first quarter of 2027, the modern life science & tech property “CHARLOTTE” with 7,000 square meters of rental space will be built not far from the Technical University.
