The first of the high-rise buildings currently under construction at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz was the office tower of the building complex “The Berlinian” to celebrate its topping-out ceremony on January 14, 2026. As the developer Commerz Real, Commerzbank’s real assets subsidiary, announced, the shell construction work was completed in December 2025 and the interior work began at the beginning of January 2026. Completion is scheduled for May 2027.
“City East will have a striking new skyline thanks to what is currently the tallest multi-storey building in our city,” said the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, on the occasion of the topping-out ceremony. “The architecture and modern design are just as convincing as the speed of construction. The new Berlin speed that we are striving for with the Faster Building Act can also be felt at Alexanderplatz. And Alexanderplatz will become more attractive in conjunction with other construction projects through the complex ‘The Berlinian’.”
Designed by the architectural firm Kleihues, the high-rise extends over 34 floors to a height of 146 meters and comprises around 40,000 square meters of rental space. Together with the adjacent Galeria department store, “The Berlinian” is to create an ensemble of office, retail, culture and gastronomy with a total area of more than 100,000 square meters. Commerz Real acquired the project development in the summer of 2023 from the now insolvent Signa Group and began implementing it on its own shortly afterwards. “The fact that we can now celebrate the topping-out ceremony is mainly thanks to the performance of the construction workers and the solution-oriented cooperation with the authorities involved and the representatives of Berlin politics,” praises Andreas Rauch, Head of Development & Construction at Commerz Real.
“The Berlinian” is part of the portfolio of Commerz Real’s Hausinvest real estate fund. Since 1972, the company has been investing long-term in residential and commercial properties in good and very good locations in Germany, Europe, the USA and Australia. In Berlin, in addition to the complex at Alexanderplatz, the fund holds two office buildings in Mitte (Potsdamer Platz 5) and Wilmersdorf (Hohenzollerndamm 44), the Adidas building on Kurfürstendamm, Tauentzien Straße 15, and two residential properties in Wannsee (Wannseegärten) and Mitte (Monbijouplatz 8-10).
