SUBSIDIZED CLEAR-CUTTING FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT RENOVATION – A FATAL SIGNAL FOR CLIMATE PROTECTION AND THE ECONOMY

Statement by Jan Bewarder, CEO REM CAPITAL AG, on the Federal Government’s planned funding cut for energy-efficient refurbishment.

“Anyone who cuts back on climate protection in the building sector is not only endangering the climate – but also the future of an entire industry.

I am very concerned about the Federal Government’s plans to cut funding for energy-efficient building renovation by almost 20%. Particularly affected: the BEG-WG and BEG-NWG programmes, which are central pillars of the transformation of the building stock.

What is sold as “budget consolidation” is in fact a step backwards with an announcement.
Planning? Nothing. Incentives? Are destroyed. Climate targets? Moved further and further away. The building sector thus once again remains the unloved stepchild of climate policy. Anyone who acts in this way gambles away trust – and jobs.

Yes, it is true that the funds for social housing are increasing. This is also to be welcomed. But what good is social housing if it remains energy-efficient, inefficient and expensive to maintain? We demand: Climate protection and housing promotion must not be an either-or – they belong inseparably together.”
