Cardo Brussels Hotel by Aroundtown Receives “Very Good” BREEAM Certification

Modernized technical infrastructure and resource-efficiency measures have secured the Cardo Brussels Hotel, part of the Aroundtown portfolio, its initial BREEAM certification with a rating of “Very Good.” BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is an internationally recognized certification system for assessing the sustainability and environmental performance of buildings. As part of the modernization program, the hotel’s heating, ventilation, hot water, and cooling systems were renewed and replaced with energy-efficient installations. The entire building has been equipped with LED lighting. In addition, smart water metering and monitoring systems for water-intensive facilities were implemented. In the area of accessibility, the building achieved the highest BREEAM rating. The hotel features step-free access, wheelchair-accessible areas, adapted circulation spaces, as well as accessible vertical transportation and facilities.

The Cardo Brussels Hotel is located in the center of the Belgian capital, Brussels. The building’s façade is inspired by René Magritte’s painting “Le fils de l’homme.” The hotel comprises 30 floors and more than 500 rooms, including 46 suites. Additional amenities include 15 conference and event rooms, a rooftop pool, and a spa area. Its location in the business district, convenient access to the train station, and proximity to Brussels Airport make the hotel attractive for both business and leisure travelers. Landmarks such as the Royal Palace, the Atomium, St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral, and Brussels Park are all within walking distance.

The BREEAM certification of the Cardo Brussels Hotel reflects the ongoing modernization of the Aroundtown portfolio with a focus on energy efficiency, resource conservation, and user comfort. Through targeted technical upgrades, Aroundtown continues to enhance its properties in key European cities for the long term. The company is listed on the MDAX and is one of Europe’s major publicly listed real estate companies.

Since 1990,BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) has been one of the leading international certification systems for assessing the sustainability of buildings. Thanks to its holistic approach, BREEAM enables buildings to be compared globally on the basis of defined sustainability targets. It assesses properties across categories such as management, health and wellbeing, energy, transport, water, materials, waste, land use and ecology, as well as pollution. The system defines clear sustainability standards and, through its global comparability, ensures a uniform assessment framework that can be applied to existing buildings as well as new builds and refurbishment projects. BREEAM promotes the assessment of a building’s current sustainability status and its continuous optimisation through the recurring recertification process.

Thanks to its international relevance and broad applicability, BREEAM certification supports user satisfaction and the long-term value retention of properties – a clear added value for owners, tenants and sustainability goals. Over 70 per cent of all commercial properties in the Aroundtown portfolio are already BREEAM certified.
