Cureus, a property owner specialising in residential care properties which builds new developments for its own portfolio and actively manages it, and the care specialist compassio, as the future operator of the care and residential facility in Halberstadt, provided in-depth insights yesterday into the new care home currently under construction during a site celebration featuring a tour of the show flats and a careers day.
In the presence of Thomas Rimpler, Deputy Mayor and Head of the Department for Economic Affairs, Urban Planning and Culture for the City of Halberstadt, the approximately 50 invited guests were given an update on the current status of the two new buildings under construction, were taken on guided tours, and were given a first glimpse of the show flat already fitted out by compassio. As part of the compassio careers afternoon open to the public, interested attendees were then able to find out more, in particular, about career prospects at this new care facility.
The guests were well looked after. Construction will continue until March 2027 at Hans-Neupert-Straße 1A in 38820 Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt). Olaf Joop Projektbau GmbH, based in Faßberg, is acting as the main contractor.
ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
“We are now entering the home straight with this construction project,” says Stefanie Zacharias-Srocke, project manager at Cureus, as she outlines the next steps: “From now until spring 2027, the technical systems will be installed indoors and the fit-out completed; weather permitting, the solar panel system on the roof will also be installed. From mid-January to the end of March 2027, the various technical and regulatory inspections for this modern and highly energy-efficient building will take place in stages; in terms of its technical design, this is one of the first of its kind for us. The handover to compassio is scheduled for the end of March 2027, so that operations can begin immediately. Carestone will also commence the planned sale of the individual flats shortly thereafter.”
As part of the compassio Halberstadt retirement home complex, two modern, accessible buildings are being constructed in two parallel construction phases on a site of approximately 7,400 square metres in an established residential area in the south of Halberstadt. The energy-optimised KfW Efficiency Houses are fitted with photovoltaic systems and heat pumps for heating and hot water production. Furthermore, the flat roofs will be extensively greened, which aids rainwater retention and also improves the microclimate. The planting of new trees on the site is also part of this construction project. Further construction details…
LIVING AND WORKING IN THE RETIREMENT HOME
Care places and supported living in one location
compassio will offer 140 care places in modern single rooms at the Halberstadt retirement home for full-time residential care and short-term care, as well as 24 accessible flats for supported living. This will create a diverse range of services for older people with varying care needs.
The living concept combines privacy with opportunities for socialising and interaction. The single rooms have en-suite bathrooms and can be furnished with personal items and mementos. Eight residential groups, each with their own kitchen-diner and communal areas, provide space for shared activities. A restaurant with its own kitchen, a lounge with a fireplace and a library, therapy rooms and a hairdresser’s complete the facilities on offer. The outdoor areas, as well as the proximity to the Goldbach, the Tiergarten and the Jahnwiese, offer opportunities for relaxation and exercise. At the same time, the city centre and shopping facilities are easily accessible.
“It is important to us that the people living with us can shape their daily lives as individually as possible and feel at home in their new surroundings. This includes personalised care tailored to their needs, familiar belongings in their own rooms, and spaces where a sense of community can flourish. “With our services, we aim to provide appropriate support for both people with long-term care needs and those who choose assisted living,” says Claudia Mendel, manager of the Halberstadt retirement home.
More than 80 new jobs
Whilst preparing for the opening, compassio is putting together its future team. Around 85 jobs in care, administration, building services and support are planned for the site. In addition to qualified nurses and care assistants, the company is also looking for staff for other areas. compassio offers a wide range of career opportunities, further training and development, as well as attractive employee benefits.
“The new site offers the chance to be part of it right from the start, to contribute your own ideas and to work together to create a good working environment. We look forward to welcoming people who want to contribute their skills and help us build the Halberstadt retirement home,” says Julia Glöggler, Ramp-Up Manager at compassio.

Plans to market the care flats on a fractional ownership basis
Much like buying a flat in a block of flats, private investors have the option of acquiring care flats and supported accommodation on a fractional ownership basis. This is less about personal use and more about a stable and meaningful investment for retirement provision. The sustainable – and therefore eligible for subsidies – construction project in Halberstadt offers buyers attractive interest rates from KfW Bank as well as significant tax benefits through declining balance depreciation. This makes the investment both socially valuable and lucrative. Find out more…
