VSB has commenced construction work on the Liethe-Lehmden repowering wind farm in the municipality of Rastede. Three new wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 18 megawatts (MW) will replace four existing turbines. The new wind farm is expected to supply electricity from renewable energy sources to around 11,300 three-person households per year. This means that electricity output will increase more than tenfold compared with the old wind farm.
With the repowering of the Liethe-Lehmden site, the company is building its first wind farm in Lower Saxony. The project is being managed by the VSB regional office in Osnabrück. The preliminary archaeological surveys of the site have been completed. Work is now underway to set up the construction site, build the access roads and prepare the crane sites. The nature of the subsoil at one of the turbine sites presents a particular challenge: the ground is water-saturated and peaty in places. Additional measures are therefore required to ensure the construction area is dry and stable. The preparatory work for the foundations is due to be completed by the end of the year, marking an important milestone.
From February 2027, the four existing NEG Micon NM52 turbines, each with a capacity of 0.9 MW, are due to be dismantled. The components for the three new Vestas V150 turbines are due to be delivered from June onwards. A self-propelled blade transporter will be used to transport the rotor blades to the construction site. Commissioning is scheduled for late summer 2027.
“Once construction begins, the planning stage gives way to a concrete project on the ground. We are further developing a site that has long been used for wind energy and significantly increasing its capacity,” says Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB in Germany.
VSB is developing further wind energy projects in Lower Saxony: in July 2026, the Oldenbrok Süd project, situated some 20 kilometres away, was approved with a planned total capacity of 14 MW.
