Together with WohnRaum Niedersachsen GmbH and the Lower Saxony Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport and Construction, Grant Hendrik Tonne, WERTGRUND Wohnpartner GmbH celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the first construction phase in the Liesel Quartier, on the former site of Gothaer Versicherung in the southern Göttingen city area. In addition, the event was also attended by the Lord Mayor of Göttingen, Petra Boistedt, and the internationally renowned Swiss architect Max Dudler, whose office is responsible for the architecture of the new building complex.
With the symbolic laying of the foundation stone, the development of the quarter is progressing according to plan and sends a strong signal for the creation of affordable housing in Lower Saxony. On the first construction site with an area of around 11,600 square metres, a total of 220 apartments are being built under Wertgrund’s project development, 67 of which are subsidised. WohnRaum Niedersachsen acquired the subsidised apartments during the planning phase, thus providing an early impetus for the marketing of the entire first construction phase. The other 118 apartments and a daycare center have since been acquired by Catella for a special fund. A total of around 600 apartments are planned on the site. The first units are expected to be ready for occupancy as early as the beginning of 2028

Lower Saxony’s Minister of Construction, Grant Hendrik Tonne, emphasizes: “The laying of the foundation stone in the Liesel Quartier shows how new, affordable housing can be created through cooperation between the public sector and private partners. Especially in times of tight housing markets, such projects are an important contribution to sustainable urban development and social mix. Lower Saxony is thus supporting initiatives that combine subsidised housing, high energy standards and good urban integration.”
Sylva Viebach, Managing Director of WohnRaum Niedersachsen GmbH, adds: “This project is an example of how the state-owned company can contribute to the housing supply in Lower Saxony with private partners. The partnership with WERTGRUND shows that sustainable housing offers can be created together for different target groups.”
Mayor Petra Broistedt welcomes Wertgrund’s initiative with WohnRaum and Catella in Göttingen. “The first considerations for the quarter date back to 2018. The fact that this district development, which is so important for the city, is now starting despite the current difficult market environment is proof to me of the good framework conditions and locational quality of our city.”
With a total of around 600 planned rental apartments on an area of around 37,000 square metres, the Liesel Quartier is one of the largest residential developments in Göttingen. Around 40 percent of the apartments are subsidized, subdued or offered at reduced prices. The total living space is about 44,000 square meters.
The buildings are being built in accordance with the energy-efficient KfW 40 standard and benefit from their location close to the city centre: Göttingen city centre is only about one kilometre away, and the Georg-August-Universität can be reached in around eight minutes by bike.
With today’s laying of the foundation stone, WERTGRUND, WohnRaum Niedersachsen and Catella underline their joint commitment to the creation of affordable and sustainable housing as a contribution to the positive development of Göttingen as a residential location.
