wpd’s first Japanese onshore wind project, the Higashi Izu Furusato wind farm in Shizuoka Prefecture, started commercial operation on 1 June 2026 on schedule and within budget. This underlines wpd’s high level of expertise in project management and successful project implementation.
The project was developed by Higashi Izu Wind Power Godo Kaisha, a joint venture between wpd and the GPSS Group. The wind farm is located on a ridge on the Izu Peninsula about 120 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. For the construction work, the installation company Achiha Co., Ltd. used machines and equipment specially designed for steep terrain, which enabled the project to be successfully implemented despite demanding technical conditions.
The wind farm has an installed capacity of 7.48 MW and consists of three wind turbines from the manufacturer Enercon. The electricity generated will be supplied to Nomura Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. (Nomura Real Estate) under a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) via the electricity supplier NF Power Services Co., Ltd. (NFPS). The company plans to use the green electricity to operate its new headquarters in Tokyo, supporting its decarbonization goals.
Against the backdrop of rising electricity prices and increasing market volatility, corporate PPAs are becoming increasingly important for companies seeking greater cost stability. The Higashi Izu Furusato project reflects this development by directly linking renewable energy generation to a company’s demand.
As Japan continues to advance its goals in the areas of decarbonization and energy security, projects such as Higashi Izu Furusato demonstrate wpd’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to strengthen energy independence through the expansion of domestically generated renewable energy.
Björn Nullmeyer, CFO wpd: “We are very pleased and proud that the commissioning of the Higashi Izu project is not only the first project for wpd in Japan, but also the first project with an Asian cooperation partner. Our special thanks go to all project partners involved and our teams. In addition to our extensive portfolio as an IPP (Independent Power Producer) in Taiwan, this is another logical step for us to expand our activities in the Asia-Pacific region.”
With the start of operation, the Higashi Izu Furusato wind farm is a convincing example of how international expertise and strong local partnerships can produce reliable and economically viable solutions in the field of renewable energies – and thus support both regional sustainability goals and the overarching path to climate neutrality.
